The eight-speed tiptronic system
The standard eight-speed tiptronic system is tuned to peak sporting performance. All gear changes are fast and flexible. The impressive effectiveness of the classic automatic torque converter is supported by the high-efficiency oil pump and the heating of the transmission system by the cooling water in the warm-up phase. A hydraulic accumulator enables the start-stop function. Drivers can choose between D and S modes or change gear themselves, either with the jog function or via the shift paddles on the RS multifunction sports leather-covered steering wheel. In manual tip-shift mode an indicator in the driver information system (DIS) or optionally in the head-up display shows the rpm limit. While the lower gears of the tiptronic system are closely staggered in a sporty way, the long-ratio eighth gear reduces fuel consumption.
Audi and quattro GmbH achieved these top levels with their combined expertise in engine development. The measures for the 4.0 TFSI range from the specific engine control with speed and boost pressure increase, through the modified exhaust valves, all the way to optimizing the internal geometry of the turbocharger for efficiency.
