Driving comfort and safety - shock absorbers are subjected to continuous wear that is often not noticed by the driver. Defective shock absorbers can have the following effects: longer stopping distance, reduced grip, reduced cornering stability and compromised steering safety. The efficiency of safety relevant systems such as ABS and ESP can be reduced by defective shock absorbers.
Operation
In the hydraulic telescopic shock absorber, a piston, guided by a piston rod, moves up and down in a cylinder filled with oil or an oil/gas mixture during compression and rebound. The higher the frequency of the vibrations from the body and wheel suspension that act on the shock absorber, the faster the piston moves. This increases the oil's flow resistance and thereby the damping effect.
