Headlights

adaptive light including variable beam angle adjustment

Adaptive light including variable headlight range control includes the dynamic cornering light, static turning light and variable headlight range control.

The dynamic cornering light detects the course of the road from the movements of the steering wheel and variably lights curves with the swivelling xenon plus headlights at a speed range from approx. 10 to 110 km/h.

The static turning light automatically switches on when the indicator has been on for a while and illuminates the new driving direction.

For the variable headlight range control system, light sources from other road users are detected via a camera on the interior mirror. The headlight range and breadth is infinitely variably adjusted between main and dipped beam to fit the current surroundings, providing good vision without dazzling other road users.

In addition, three different headlight beam distributions are available which are adjusted according to the vehicle speed: city light, motorway light and country road light.

Audi connect also enables the three light beam distributions to be controlled by the vehicle support based on navigation data with the help of the saved route data from the MMI® navigation plus or MMI® navigation plus with MMI touch.

The convenient functions of the light assistant are supplemented by the junction light with its wide front illumination and the travel mode which switches between right and left-hand drive traffic with support from GPS data (only Audi A8).

Headlight washers

A headlight washer system guarantees the driver optimum visibility even in poor weather conditions.

LED headlights

featuring LED dipped beam, main beam, daytime running lights, indicators, static turning light, all-weather light and motorway light function with LED technology; includes main beam assist for automatic switching between main and dipped beams, an  all-weather light function to reduce the risk of the driver being dazzled when visibility is poor (in fog, rain or snow) and an additional motorway light which automatically increases headlight range from a speed of approximately 110 km/h; LED technology allows near daylight illumination of the road; minimal energy requirements, long service life, and excellent recognition by other road users, thanks to the crisp Audi lighting pattern with day and night design configurations

Light / rain sensor

The automatic headlight activation automatically controls the headlights depending on the light conditions. The light sensor measures the lighting conditions and controls the coming home/leaving home function. The path to or from the vehicle is illuminated when the driver leaves the vehicle or unlocks it via the remote control. The rain sensor automatically adjusts the wiper interval according to how heavily the rain is falling. Light-emitting diodes inside the sensor emit invisible infrared light which reflects through the outer surface of the windscreen and is then measured by photodiodes. The measurements take place continuously.

Separate daytime running lights

The separate daytime running lights are integrated in the main headlights. They are automatically activated when the engine is started, and are automatically dimmed when the dipped beam headlights or the indicators are switched on. On the Audi A8 the daytime running lights can be switched on and off via the MMI®. In addition, they can also be used dimmed as auxiliary and parking lighting.

Xenon plus

The Xenon plus headlight system generates particularly bright main and dipped beams and increases the range, breadth and uniformity of the illumination of the road surface when it is dark or under poor weather conditions.

 

Gas discharge headlights (xenon plus headlights) contain the noble gas xenon and generate a beam with approximately twice the luminous flux (lumen) of halogen headlights. The near-daylight white light generated by xenon headlights results from the fact that the spectrum of gas discharge bulbs is much closer to daylight than the light generated by conventional halogen bulbs. Service life is also longer than a halogen H1, H7 or H4 bulb. As the power control is separated from the vehicle's electrical system, a constant light output is achieved.

Sunroofs

Glass sunroof

The glass sliding sunroof is easy to slide open/closed (tilt function) and retract. In the Audi A8, an incremental automatically extending wind deflector reduces draughts and disruptive wind noise (depending on roof opening and travelling speed). Convenience closing from outside via the central locking and the radio remote control.

Panoramic sunroof

Two-piece panoramic sunroof electrical activation to raise and open the front glass section as well as to raise the rear glass section, opens and closes automatically, tinted glass insert; including two electrically operated sun blinds for the glass parts, comfort closing from outside via the central locking system or the radio-operated remote control; ensures a comfortable interior that is flooded with light, good acoustics and low wind noise when the sunroof is extended or fully opened; improved interior clima by means of efficient ventilation whilst at the same time reducing draughts; includes make up mirrors and additional reading lights in the rear; when the light outside is particularly bright, the surrounding roof darkens.

Solar sunroof

The solar sliding sunroof can be raised (tilt function) and retracted. The solar cells integrated into the sliding sunroof produce electricity even with low levels of sunlight and this energy is used to power the fans in the vehicle.

Windows

Double/acoustic glazing

Double glazing consists of two panes of laminated safety glass, which are bonded to one another by a film. If the glass breaks, the splinters remain stuck to the film. The film dampens the sound waves, thereby reducing the transmission of outside noise into the passenger compartment.
UV radiation is almost completely absorbed. Using tinted film combines the advantages of acoustic comfort, safety and shading.

Grey-coloured glass is used for the darker tinted glass from the B-pillar rearward. Depending on the model series, the tinted privacy glass can be made of either toughened single-layer safety glass (TSG) and/or laminated safety glass (LSG).

MMI touch®

The MMI® touch is located in the centre console in the Audi A8. It is always installed in the vehicle when MMI® navigation plus is ordered. MMI® touch allows intuitive operation that is almost completely free from distraction and happily turns a blind eye to messy handwriting.

MMI® navigation plus

MMI navigation plus impressively represents the innovative nature of the new MMI generation and shows what Vorsprung durch Technik means in the field of infotainment: the greatest degree of functional diversity, highest levels of operational convenience and many other customer benefits.

MMI navigation plus gives the driver a very wide range of functions, maximum operating convenience and optimum navigation.

Audi music interface

For connecting generation 4 and higher Apple iPods, an Apple iPhone (music functionality) as well as USB storage media and MP3 players. The Audi music interface is housed in the centre console; it is operated via the MMI or the multifunction leather steering wheel.

Rear Seat Entertainment

Rear Seat Entertainment consists of 2 high-resolution adjustable-angle 10.2-inch LCD displays for the rear passengers; separate single DVD player in the rear compartment; 2 SDHC card readers, a dedicated jukebox with 20 GB of storage; Audi music interface with facility for connecting to an iPod, USB media (e.g. external hard disc), AUX-in and A/V-in (e.g. external video games consoles); supports audio formats (MP3, WMA and AAC-compatible) and video formats (MPEG-1, 2, 4, WMV and Xvid-compatible) as well as playlists; copy-protected music files (DRM) cannot be played.

Use of navigation functions, e.g. navigation system display same as in MMI display, separate route planning and transfer of navigation information to MMI navigation plus with MMI touch is possible. Includes separate MMI control panel for the rear passengers, based on the proven MMI operating concept, with 2 separate volume controls incorporated into the rear centre armrest.

Possible to have separate and shared video and audio sources for the left and right-hand seats; sound is output via the vehicle’s sound system; possible to have wireless headphones (included in package) or wired headphones.

The Bluetooth car phone is controlled using the infotainment system of the vehicle (MMI®, multifunction leather steering wheel, voice control system). The Bluetooth car phone is therefore a fully-fledged telephone system with all of the accustomed comfort functions like call toggling, call holding, conference calls, reading and editing of SMS text messages (via a cordless handset), administration of telephone lists and ring tone settings. Audi pre sense front implements preventive occupant protection measures when threatened with an imminent frontal collision. Working within system limits, Audi pre sense front utilises the front sensors of the adaptive cruise control with Stop&Go function to carry out its detection tasks; includes Audi braking guard which observes the vehicle’s surroundings and then warns the driver of any imminent threat of frontend collision with the vehicle ahead and implements preventative occupant protection measures.

Audi pre sense plus is included if Audi side assist is also ordered. In addition to the functions of Audi pre sense front, Audi pre sense plus activates the Audi braking guard in certain situations when a collision is unavoidable and initiates a full braking action to minimise the severity of the crash as much as possible. Audi lane assist

lane compliance assistant; working within system limits, it informs the driver if he is unintentionally leaving the traffic lane (operating range 60–250 km/h). If the system is activated and operational and if the driver has not switched on the indicator, the driver will be notified via steering wheel vibrations shortly before or while crossing the traffic lane marker recognised by Audi lane assist. Can only be ordered in conjunction with 4-spoke multifunction leather steering wheel.

Audi lane assist in combination with Audi side assist

Lane markings are detected with the aid of a camera. If Audi lane assist detects lane markings on both sides of the lane in which the vehicle is travelling, the system is ready for use (in the Audi A8 it is sufficient for one lane marking to be detected). If the vehicle is approaching a recognised lane marking and is threatening to leave the lane, the driver is warned by a vibration of the steering wheel. If the driver activates an indicator before crossing a lane marking while the system is active, no warning is given, as the system assumes that the change of lane is deliberate.

 

The Audi side assist functions above 30 km/h using sensors to monitor the areas to the side behind the vehicle. If a vehicle is approaching quickly from behind or is in the blind spot, Audi side assist warns the driver by continuously lighting up the warning indicator in the exterior mirror. If the system has detected a vehicle in the monitored area and the driver switches on an indicator, the light in the exterior mirror starts flashing brightly to warn the driver.

 

Audi pre sense basic

Networking the different vehicle systems enables driving situations to be categorised and, where necessary, actions to be implemented for preventive occupant protection. Such actions include seat belt tensioning, activation of the hazard warning lights and closing of sunroof and windows.

Audi side assist including Audi pre sense rear

Lane change assistant; working within system limits, it assists the driver when changing lanes (operating range 30–250 km/h). Displays are incorporated into both exterior mirrors. Audi side assist uses 2 radar sensors to measure the vehicle’s distance from other vehicles it has detected as well as the speed difference between them. If Audi side assist classifies the speed difference and distance as being critical in the event of a lane change, a display will appear in the respective exterior mirror.

In addition to the functions of Audi pre sense basic Audi pre sense rear, working within the system’s limits, uses the rear sensors of Audi side assist to detect a possible rear-end collision. If the vehicle is fitted with a seat memory function then the upper backrest and the head restraint are moved to a position more favourable should a rear-end collision occur. If comfort seats or comfort sports seats are fitted, the pneumatic seat bolsters are also filled with air.

Audi pre sense plus is included if adaptive cruise control with Stop&Go function is also ordered. In addition to the functions of Audi pre sense front, Audi pre sense plus activates the Audi braking guard in certain situations when a collision is unavoidable and initiates a full braking action to minimise the severity of the crash as much as possible

The cruise control system maintains any desired speed above 30 km/h as long as this is permitted by the engine‘s power output and braking effect. Cruise control is automatically deactivated if the driver applies the brakes or presses the clutch. The set speed remains stored and can be activated again at any time.

Night vision assistant with highlighting of detected pedestrians

A thermal imaging camera (remote infrared with resolution of 320x240 pixels) registers heat dissipation in front of the vehicle and represents this image in the 7” Driver’s Information System.

Image recognition software highlights people detected in the darkness and a warning bell is sounded if the system classifies them as being at risk.

System operation may be restricted in too much ambient light, high humidity and high night time temperatures.

Anti-theft alarm with tow-away protection

The anti-theft alarm (ATA) is made up of the following four components:

Exterior monitoring: doors, luggage compartment and engine compartment are secured against unauthorised use.

Interior monitoring: the passenger compartment is monitored via ultrasound. The system can also detect people trying to enter the vehicle by smashing a window. It is possible to deactivate interior monitoring via a separate button, for example in order to leave pets inside the vehicle for short periods of time. Subsequent locking periods are not affected by this.

Anti-tow-away function: an inclination sensor detects minute changes in the position of the vehicle (e.g. due to theft of vehicle by loading it onto a trailer or due to theft of the wheels) and sounds an alarm.

 

Back-up horn: a system which operates independently of the onboard electrical supply will still sound an alarm (signal horn – no indicators) if the battery is disconnected or short-circuited.

The power-assisted door closing system helps passengers to close the doors. It closes any doors which are not fully closed, pulling them shut until the door lock is properly engaged. The electric child-proof locks for the rear doors can be activated and deactivated by the driver via a button in the driver's door.

The adaptive air suspension system manages to bring together two seemingly polar opposites –comfort and dynamism. This is made possible thanks to a combination of fully load-bearing air springs on the front and rear axles and an infinitely variable, electronically controlled damping system.

The high-end version of quattro also distributes the drive torque variably between the wheels of the rear axle; if required almost all of the power can be directed to just one of the two wheels. Controlling where and how much torque is applied enables the car's self-steer properties to be influenced in a targeted manner – right up to completely neutral handling. The effectiveness of the sports differential can not only be evidenced when the vehicle is under load but in deceleration conditions too. Centre armrest

Front centre armrest

The centre armrest, for driver and front-passenger, is movable. It is covered with the same material as the side sections of the seats. In conjunction with the mobile phone fitting (Bluetooth), it can be installed in the centre armrest.

A comfort centre armrest is available as an option for the Audi A8. This split armrest allows the driver and the front passenger to find their own perfect individual seat positions. It also includes integral storage compartments and – in conjunction with the car phone – the cordless handset.

ISOFIX is a cross-manufacturer standard for child seat mountings. With the ISOFIX system, child safety seats (some specially approved by Audi) are attached to the vehicle via fixed anchorages. In just a few quick and easy steps, the child safety seat is pushed into the anchorages in the vehicle until the integrated locks engage. The ISOFIX anchorages can be found on the outer rear seats and optionally on the front passenger seat.

Tyre pressure monitoring display

Like the 1st generation tyre pressure monitoring display (RKA), an indirect measuring system, the 2nd generation tyre pressure monitoring display (RKA+) uses the signals from the ABS/ESC wheel speed sensors to determine any differences in rotational speed between the individual wheels and from these differences is able to detect if there has been any loss in pressure. These same signals are also used to evaluate the resonant frequencies of the individual wheels and from this evaluation,
the system is able to detect any potential loss of pressure. Unlike the direct-measuring RDK tyre pressure monitoring system, the tyre pressures are not explicitly measured and nor are pressures displayed in the vehicle. The position of the tyre affected is displayed so that the customer knows which tyre to check.
